Dialup Hardware Requirements & Speed Expectations

Dialup speeds

The standard speed for dialup is just 56kbps (that's nothing compared to NBN™!) but the speed may also be affected by the following:

  • The quality of your copper phone line
  • The quality and capability of your computer and dialup modem

If you're experiencing line noise on your Home Phone, this may affect your dialup performance.

Hardware requirements

Your computer system is extremely likely to meet the following minimum requirements:

  • 256MB RAM
  • 500MHz CPU or higher
  • Windows 98 operating system or later
  • 20GB hard drive

Computers these days don't have built-in dialup modems like they used to. To use dialup, you'll need one of the following:

  • A computer with a built-in 56kbps dialup modem
  • An external 56kbps dialup modem to plug into your computer (commonly a USB plug)

You should be able to purchase one of these at a computer and/or electronics store.
