What is a Private IP VPN?

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) provides the means to securely connect remote locations over a network. In many ways a VPN service is similar to a regular DSL service; however a VPN does not provide direct internet access, only access to the shared resources within each unique network. These resources may include servers, applications and mission critical company data.
Internet access can be broadcast across the network by 'patching' in a separate DSL service at one of the VPN sites and sharing it with the remainder of the network. This is done by specifying a location as the 'default gateway' for specific traffic types such as internet.

What is the highest upstream and downstream speed Private IP VPN connections can receive?

This is totally dependant on the infrastructure available in any given area. Depending on availability, symmetrical speeds (SHDSL) ranging from 512kbps/512kbps to 2048kbps/2048kbps can be achieved. All asymmetrical (ADSL) speeds can be achieved ranging from 512kbps/128kbps to 20Mbps/820kbps and are also subject to availability.

I haven't been able to get ADSL on my line before as my house is too far from the exchange to support it. Will I be able to get a Private IP VPN service?

Unfortunately, no. If your line is unable to support a regular ADSL service, it will not have the capability to support a Private IP VPN service.

Will I be able to use my current ADSL router supplied by Westnet for the Private IP VPN service?

No, routers will need to be purchased from Westnet specifically for the purpose of running the service. This allows Westnet to provide maximum possible functionality and reliability for the service. CISCO 877 routers are recommended for Westnet Business Grade ADSL services and CISCO 878 routers are recommended for Westnet SHDSL.
