The first step in connecting to Broadband is ensuring that all devices on your phone line, excluding the Broadband modem, are filtered. Put simply, filters will stop the Broadband signal/static from interfering with your telephone service. If your filters are not setup, or are connected incorrectly, you will experience problems with Broadband and your telephones.
Please be aware that your Broadband modem must not be filtered. All other devices which use a telephone line (e.g. telephones, fax machines, EFTPOS terminals, PayTV set-top boxes) must be filtered, even if they are not on the same outlet as your Broadband modem.
 | Please note: If you have a monitored alarm system, you may need to install a central splitter. You should contact your alarm company for confirmation. Central splitter installations and any other internal wiring modifications must be done by an approved technician.
Do not attempt to modify your internal telephone wiring yourself. |
Checking Your Telephone Outlets
Depending on the number of devices that you are connecting to each outlet, you may require slightly different types of filters (in addition to any adapters as outlined above).
3-Pin Outlets
If you have the older 3-Pin outlets (see diagram below), you will need an adapter to connect your ADSL line filter to the wall outlet (Fig. 1).
Modems purchased through Westnet (and most other modems) include one free adapter.
RJ-11 Outlets
If you have newer RJ-11 outlets, you should be able to connect your ADSL line filter to the wall outlet directly (Fig. 2).
Filtering Your Devices
Depending on the number of devices connected to each outlet, you will have slightly different filtering requirements.
Outlet With Single Device
For telephone outlets with a single device, an In-line Filter is required (Fig. 3):
- Plug the telephone cable from the device1 into the PHONE socket2 on the filter
- Plug the cable from the filter3 into your wall outlet
Outlet With Broadband Modem and Other Device
An In-line Splitter allows you to connect a telephony device and your Broadband modem to the same socket (Fig. 4), e.g. you may wish to place a telephone next to your computer. In-Line Splitters should be connected as follows:
- Plug the cable from your Broadband modem1 to the MODEM socket on the filter3
- Plug the cable from your telephone or other device2 to the PHONE socket on the filter4
- Plug the cable from the filter5 into the wall outlet
Outlet With Wall-Mounted Device
Special Wall-Mounted Splitters (Fig. 5) are required if you have a device that is mounted to a wall outlet, such as a telephone:
- Plug the phone cable1 attached to the wall mounted splitter into your telephone outlet
- Mount the wall mounted splitter onto the mounting screws on your outlet
- Plug the phone cable from your telephone2 into the wall mounted splitter3
- Mount the phone onto the mounting screws on the wall mounted splitter
- If you are connecting your Broadband modem to the same outlet, plug the telephone cable from your Broadband modem into the Broadband socket4 on the side of the wall mounted splitter.
- Most Wall-Mounted Splitters allow a second telephony device to be connected as well. This should be connected to the socket labelled PHONE5 on the side of the wall mounted splitter.
 | Caution Avoid running too many devices through a single filter. Multiple devices running through a single filter may produce too much 'noise' for it to adequately filter, and you may experience problems such as drop-outs or being unable to connect. If this occurs:
- Try adding a second filter between the first filter and the wall outlet
- Try moving one of the devices to another outlet
