Please Note
Westnet Support can only provide limited assistance with wireless network (WLAN) configuration.

The steps required to set up a wireless network can vary greatly - it can be as simple as turning on your wireless router, or as complicated as using a command-line interface. Because of the vast number of possible methods, Westnet Support can only assist customers with the following configuration:

  • An Open Networks iConnectAccess624W or Open Networks iConnect625W ADSL modem/router, and
  • The Mac OSX or Windows XP* operating system.

* Wireless Zero Config utility only

Important Considerations

You should make sure that you are well informed about wireless networks before you create one or add a wireless access point to your existing network. A wireless network may not be suitable for your needs - if in doubt, you should always consult a professional for advice.

Security

The most important thing to consider when setting up your wireless connection is implementing security, on both the wireless access point and the computer itself. A wireless signal can often extend farther than the area you intend to use it in, for example your neighbour's house, or the upstairs unit, etc. If your wireless network has little or no security, then it is very easy for anyone in range to connect to it.

If someone gains access to your wireless network they can cause potentially serious problems, including:
  • Being able to view, copy, edit or even delete personal files stored on your computer(s)
  • Using your computer(s) and Westnet internet connection for malicious purposes
  • Exceeding your monthly download allowance, causing you to be billed for excess usage or your connection to be shaped (depending on your plan and choice)

Seeking Advice

Talking to other people who have wireless networks implemented is a good place to start as they can often recommend things they did to secure their network. You could also use the internet for research - most hardware manufacturers have guides available on their website to help you configure your wireless network, and many also have contact details for their technical support departments. There are also plenty of sites that cover wireless and/or computer security specifically. You may like to start with the sites listed below.

If you still do not fully understand everything after doing some research, it is advisable to have a trained technician install the wireless network for you. They will be able to ensure that the access point is in the best position for optimal signal range, and that you have adequate security for both your wireless network and computer(s).
