To access Westnet newsgroups through Outlook Express, please follow these steps:

  • Open Outlook Express by clicking the Outlook Express option on the Start menu.
  • Once the Outlook Express window appears, look along the top toolbar and click on the Tools option.
    • A drop down menu will now appear.

  • Click on the Accounts option.
    • The Internet Accounts window will now appear.

  • Click on the Add button.
  • Click on the News option.
    • The Your Name window will now appear.

  • In the Display Name dialogue box, type the name you want to use. This will be the name you want other people to see on the newsgroups.
  • Once you have done that, click the Next button.
    • The Internet News E-mail Address window will now appear.

  • Type your e-mail address details (e.g. username@westnet.com.au) into the E-mail address dialogue box and then click Next.
    Please Note:
Newsgroups are open to the public and therefore are regularly scanned for the purpose of gathering email information to then send you unsolicited (spam) emails. If you do not wish for this to occur, enter a fake email address into the Email address dialogue box.
    • The Internet News Server Name window will now appear.

  • In the News (NNTP) server dialogue box, enter news.westnet.com.au and then click Next.
    • The Congratulations window will now appear.

  • Click the Finish button.
    • The Internet Accounts window will now appear again.

  • Click the Close button.
    • A message will appear asking "Would you like to download newsgroups from the news account you added?"

  • Click the Yes button.
    • Outlook Express will commence downloading a list of Westnet newsgroups available on the server. After a few minutes, a list of Westnet newsgroups will be displayed.

  • You can subscribe to a newsgroup by clicking on the newsgroup and then clicking the Subscribe button. You can also subscribe by double-clicking a newsgroup in the list.
  • You can also display newsgroups that only contain a specific word by using the Search dialogue box at the top of the window.
  • Click the OK button when you have finished.
    • In this example, we have chosen to display newsgroups which contain the word 'westnet'. We have then subscribed to the local.westnet.photos newsgroup.

  • To download all messages for the newsgroup you have subscribed to, click the Synchronize Account button.
  • To subscribe to more newsgroups, click the Newsgroups button.
    • These options can be seen in the image below.

  • Once your newsgroup has been synchronised, you can click on the newsgroup to view the posts.
    • The newsgroup will be listed under news.westnet.com.au in the menu on the left.

    • In this example, we can see the posts available in the local.westnet.photos newsgroup.
