Computer viruses can spread through email attachments. It is advised that any suspicious Email with attachments should be deleted as it poses a risk to your computer. The majority of viruses are activated when a file attachment containing the virus is opened or viewed. Many of these viruses have been known to then spread themselves using entries in users' address books, infecting others. Therefore, we recommend that you use care when opening file attachments, even from senders who are known by you.
Emails may contain files of many different forms, such as Microsoft Word documents and Excel spreadsheets, Zip files, media files and executable files. Messages that contain attachments display a paper clip next to the subject.
Some types of files, such as JPEG images or text files, can be opened on almost any computer system. Others, such as Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, must be opened using the same application that created them, (or a reader version of that program). Note: If you choose to view the attachment, you must have the corresponding application on your computer that can read that type of file in order to view it.
